Cool Features
Microsoft® Internet Mail and News enables you to communicate with others on the Internet through
electronic mail and newsgroups. With electronic mail, or e-mail, you can exchange
messages and files with other people on the Internet. Internet newsgroups
consist of messages by individuals, organized by topic. You can take part by
posting a message of your own, responding to a message, or sending an e-mail
message directly to the author of a message.
General
Internet Mail and News supports the following:
- Internet Config mail and news Preference settings. Also, Internet Mail and News now starts when you click a "mailto:" or "news:" link in Microsoft Internet Explorer, and Internet Explorer starts when you click a URL in a mail or news message in Internet Mail and News.
- View a list of mail and news messages and the contents of a message in the same window for fast reading and navigation.
- With multi-user support, many different uses can use the same copy of Internet Mail and News.
- Internet standards, including SMTP, POP3, and MIME.
- Quickly find what you are looking for in the Mail, Newsgroups, and Address Book windows using the Internet Mail and News type-ahead feature which will automatically fill in the rest of the word that matches the letters you have typed.
- Drag-and-drop.
- Support for user groups in the address book.
Mail Features
Internet Mail supports the following:
- Receiving and sending enclosures that consist of BinHex, UUEncode, Base64, and MIME.
- The ability to sort mail into folders and create additional folders.
- Type-ahead addressing of mail. For example, if "Bob Smith" is in your address book, when you type B in the To field, "Bob Smith" will be filled in for you. Just pressing the Comma key accepts the entry and advances the cursor to the end of the line.
- The ability to send messages immediately or store them in an Outbox until you choose to connect to the server.
- Importing or exporting the address book--specifically, Eudora Pro, Claris Emailer, and Netscape Navigator.
- Offline editing and composition of mail.
- Automatic launch of a helper application for reading enclosures in a mail message (such as GIF or JPEG files).
- Redirecting a mail message so that when it arrives at its destination, it is marked as from the person who sent it to you instead of as from you.
- Automatic signatures.
News Features
Internet Mail supports the following:
- Downloading binaries, including downloading several at once.
- The ability to subscribe to your favorite newsgroups.
- Multiple servers.
- The ability to search your news server for only new newsgroups.
- Incremental download of news subjects.
- Receiving enclosures that consist of BinHex, UUEncode, Base64, and MIME.
- Saving a news message and its enclosures in a folder for later reading.
Connecting to the Internet
- First, you need a physical connection between your Macintosh® computer and the Internet.
- If you are at work and your computer is attached to a network that has Internet access, you can use it to connect to the Internet. Check with your network administrator for more information.
- If you are at home or your work network does not have an Internet connection, you can use a modem to connect to an Internet service provider that will give you access to the Internet via phone lines. The faster the modem, the better off you are. The fastest dial-up connection that most common Internet service providers (ISPs) support is 28,800 bits per second (baud). If you need a faster connection and your ISP supports it, you can have your phone company install an ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) line to your house if available in your area. Contact your phone company for more information.
- Next, you need to connect to a host computer unless your Macintosh is directly connected to the Internet.
- If you are at work and your computer is attached to a network that has Internet access, check with your network administrator for more information.
- If you are at home or your work network does not have an Internet connection, you need to contract with an Internet service provider (ISP). ISPs have many levels of services. Look in local newspapers and magazines, Internet magazines, and talk with friends to determine what type of service you need.
- Finally, you need MacTCP (TCP/IP for Open Transport users) and MacPPP so that your Macintosh can communicate with the Internet.
- MacTCP and TCP/IP are control panels from Apple Computer Inc. that enable your Macintosh to send and receive information. Your ISP or administrator will give you the information you need to configure these control panels correctly.
- MacPPP (Point to Point Protocol) is a freeware connection package that enables your Macintosh to communicate with your ISP. If your ISP does not support PPP connections, you may need to use SLIP (Serial Line Internet Protocol). However, it is best to find an ISP that supports PPP connections, because it is newer and offers better error correction and more features. Your ISP or administrator will give you the information you need to configure MacPPP correctly.
